The Pupil Premium is a government initiative that provides targeted funding aimed at
students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Research shows that students from a disadvantaged
background underachieve compared to their peers. The government believes that the Pupil Premium
is the best way to address the current inequalities experienced by children eligible for Free School
Meals, Looked After Children and Service Children. The funding is designed to reach the students
who need it most and supports them in reaching their potential by accelerating their progress and
closing the gap between the results that Pupil Premium students achieve and those that their peers
achieve in English, maths and overall.
